Choose the tub size according to your actual filling volume, serving format and sales channel. Smaller 4–8 oz ice cream tubs are commonly used for individual servings and desserts with toppings, while 16 oz formats work well for retail pints and larger sizes suit family or bulk packaging. Do not compare capacity alone. Check the top diameter, bottom diameter, height and actual usable volume before confirming a size, especially when existing lids or filling equipment are involved.
Paper ice cream tubs are a good option when printable branding, a paper-based appearance and different barrier coating choices are important. PP ice cream tubs offer a molded, seamless structure with strong moisture resistance and dimensional stability. Your choice should depend on filling conditions, freezer storage, desired appearance, lid system, sustainability requirements and target market. For a new project, compare actual samples under your own filling and storage conditions before deciding between paper and PP.
The right coating depends on both performance requirements and your target market. PE coating is widely used for moisture resistance and reliable food packaging performance. PLA coating is plant-based and can support industrial compostability requirements under appropriate conditions. Do not select an ice cream tub lid by capacity alone. Two tubs with the same nominal volume can have different rim diameters and profiles. Confirm the top diameter, rim formation and lid structure together, then test the actual tub-and-lid combination before mass production. A suitable fit should close securely without excessive force or obvious looseness. If you already have a lid, send its dimensions or a physical sample so the matching tub can be checked against it.
They can be, provided the paperboard, coating, side seam and bottom sealing are designed for frozen-food use.
