Paper cups can become soft when moisture enters the paperboard, especially if the barrier coating is damaged or not suitable for the drink. Beverage temperature, holding time, paper quality, and cup structure can also affect stiffness.ProGreenPack selects the paper GSM and coating based on the beverage type, temperature, and expected holding time. During production, we check the coating surface for scratches or exposed paper fibers and control the forming process to avoid damaging the barrier layer. Finished cups are then filled under the intended use conditions to check whether the cup body maintains its shape and stiffness after holding the beverage for the required time.
Higher GSM usually gives the cup a thicker and firmer feel, but GSM is not the only factor. Paper thickness, fiber structure, coating, and cup shape also affect the final stiffness.
Even at the same GSM, paper cups can feel different because GSM only measures paper weight, not stiffness. Paper thickness, fiber structure, coating type, moisture level, and cup shape can all affect how firm the cup feels. A well-formed 5 oz cup can therefore feel stronger than another cup with the same GSM.
